RBS Awards
The RBS education and awards initiative got off to a great start in 1996 and 1997. Miranda Whall winner of the 1996 RBS Bronze Casting Fellowship created an installation of work that was born out of the award, in the old sculptors studio at the RBS headquarters. The 1997 winner of the Fellowship, Tony Burke, was present to receive his congratulations. The award, sponsored by the Phoenix Bronze Art Foundry and affiliated to the RA schools, gives Tony the opportunity to work in the foundry and produce an end piece of work or works to the value of £3,000.
After a nationwide competition, the first RBS residency was awarded to John Tinney, an MA graduate from Winchester School of Art. John will spend nine months in Calistoga, California making
work which will culminate in an exhibition of outdoor sculpture, one piece of which will remain in California as part of an important exhibition. The award is sponsored by the Sir Peter and Lady Michael Foundation.
Every year the RBS awards ten membership bursaries for young sculptors, giving free membership to the Society for one year. This year, design company Wybo Haas, chose the winner for their new award for young British artists from the ten 1997 RBS bursary holders. As well as being awarded £250, the winner, Gudrun Neilson, will be commissioned by Wybo Haas to design the award which will be given annually to artists and writers from a wide range of disciplines.
